The Challenge

The product team at an e-commerce technology company was preparing to transition to agile product development methods. One of the changes included embedding research into the process. The team quickly discovered the need to train designers, product managers, and engineers to empower them to prepare and execute research plans. With a 1:35 researcher-to-designer ratio, embedding a researcher on each pod (scrum team) would not have been possible—additionally, training needs to reach a global team.

Mission

Create a self-paced course that covers the basics of qualitative user experience research. The UX Research 101 course covers the following topics:

  • How to select the right method to meet research goals
  • How to find qualified participants
  • How to conduct interviews (discovery)
  • How to conduct usability and RITE tests (framing)
  • How to analyze the data and put insights into action.

The course needed to cover company-specific ethics and compliance guidelines, instructions on accessing tools to do the job, and when and how to seek research expertise.
